Amefurikozo (雨降り小僧, "rainfall kid") is a weather spirit in Japanese folklore.

Origin

Amefurikozo was illustrated by Toriyama Sekien in his Konjaku Gazu Zoku Hyakki. According to Sekien, it is in service of U-shi, a Chinese god of precipitation, and thus has the power to make the rain fall.

Appearance

Amefurikozo appears as a strange child carrying a paper lantern and wearing a hat made from the husk of an old umbrella.

Art/Fiction

  • In a short manga story of the same name by comic artist Osamu Tezuka, Amefurikozo is known as Rain Boy in the west .
  • An amefurikozo also appears in the Karas anime.
