In Japanese folklore, Ōkubi (大首) are giant heads of either men or women.
Behavior
An ōkubi appearing in the sky is a sign of impending disaster, which may be a typhoon, earthquake, tsunami, or fire. Ōkubi are otherwise harmless and will disappear soon after the first sighting.
Art/Fiction
- The 2005 movie The Great Yokai War briefly features an Ōkubi.
- The Super Sentai genre use a ōkubi-homeage in the villains some of its shows such as Fiveman (Emperess Medora), Zyuranger (Bandora), and Kakuranger (Junior/Gasha Dokuro).
