Funayūrei (船幽霊, lit. "marine spirit") are spirits found in Japanese mythology.
Funayūrei are the ghosts of people who have perished at sea. They approach people on boats and ask to borrow a ladle. If they are given a ladle, they will pour sea water into the boat until it sinks.
