Juan Baptista dos Santos was a Portuguese-born prodigy with three legs and two genitalia.
Medical condition
What appeared to be a third leg dangling from the pubis was in fact a composite of two legs, having eight toes, two heels, and two tibiae and femorawas with a small and supernumerary anus. Santos had neither sensation nor active movement in the extra leg. The knee was completely ankylosed and immobile; dos Santos claimed this was due to a Portuguese doctor having broken and reset it when dos Santos was a year old, in order to make the leg less obtrusive. The leg could be concealed easily by strapping it tightly to his right thigh. Thus, dos Santos was not at all encumbered by the dangling appendage, and he walked, ran, and rode horses with ease. It was not dos Santos' three legs that most excited medical men, but his double genitalia. He possessed two functioning penes and three scrota, the outer two of which each contained a single testis. Dos Santos claimed that the central scrotum had also contained a pair of fully-formed testes, but that these had retreated into his abdomen when he was ten years old. It was observed that urination proceeded simultaneously from both penises. An 1865 report stated that Santos used both penises during intercourse and, after finishing with one he would continue with the other. It also stated that he had a ravenous sexual appetite.
Diphallia (also known as Penile Duplication) is a condition in which a male is born with two penises. It is a rare disorder with only 1,000 cases recorded. Sufferers are also at a higher risk of spina bifida than men with one penis. A person with diphallia can urinate from one or both of his penises. In most cases, both penises are side by side and the same size, but occasionally one smaller penis will sit atop another larger one. One in 5.5 million men in the United States have two penises.
Life
Juan Baptista dos Santos was born in Portugal around 1843 in the town of Faro and was examined for the first time when he was only six months old. His parents and two siblings were well formed and it was said that his gestation and birth were uneventful.
During his lifetime, Santos was perused by several sideshows and circuses. In 1865 – he turned down a contract worth 200,000 francs to perform in a French circus. However, Santos opted to exhibit himself to medical authorities and rare ‘special’ exhibitions. He was shown before the Royal Medical and Chirurgical Society and Saint Mary's Hospital in London and examined by numerous doctors in England and France. Despite his extensive medical examinations and relative fame in medial circles only one photo of Juan Baptista dos Santos and that to focuses mainly on his dual genitalia.
Santos met Blanche Dumas who had four breasts and two vaginas in Paris and had a torrid (and rather well publicized) relationship. Both had found the only living human at the time who had the capacity to satisfy their appetite and their bodies.
