Konaki-jiji is a yokai in the local folklore of the Tokushima prefecture in Japan.


Appearance

Konaki-jiji resembles an old man, but it first appears in the form of a baby.


Behavior

Konaki-jiji is often found crying in remote mountain recesses where no babies ought to be found. When a kind-hearted traveler picks this illusory child up to comfort it, the konaki-jiji reverts to its true form, increasing its weight to 50 and then 100 kan (about 188 and 376 kilograms) and crushing the life out of the unfortunate person.


Powers

Although some stories report that he crushes those who hold him, other insist that he when is dropped, the person remains stunned and surprised. It is also said that if someone can hold Konaki-jiji regardless of his weight, that they will be rewarded with magical gifts.


Art/Fiction

  • TV sentai series Ninja Sentai Kakuranger - A konaki-jiji appears in this series as part of the Youkai Gundan.
  • Manga/TV anime Gegege no Kitarou - Konaki-jiji is one of Kitarou's friends and often hangs around with Sunakake-baba. They are very close friends, and more often than not they seem to appear together.
  • Gegege no Kitarou (Super Famicom) - Konaki-jiji has been kidnapped in this game and you, as Kitarou, must rescue him.
  • Mizuki Shigeru no Youkai Butouden (Playstation 1) - Konaki-jiji is one of the fighters in this game, the single fighting game produced related to Mizuki Shigeru sensei's works. He is somewhat awkward to use, but like the other characters he tends to be quite fun once you become accustomed to his moves.
  • Gegege no Kitarou (Gameboy Advance) - Konaki-jiji appears in this game along with the other friends of Kitarou, and they actively assist him as summoned attacks in the game.
