The Loveland frog (otherwise known as the Loveland lizard) is a bipedal cryptid that was allegedly first spotted in Loveland, Ohio.

Description/Morphology

The Loveland frog is described as standing roughly 4 feet (1.2 m) tall and having green leathery skin. It walks upright and has webbed hands and feet. The creature's head and face are like that of a frog.

Sightings

The first claimed sighting was in May 1955. A businessman is said to have seen three or four 3-foot (0.91 m)-tall frog-faced creatures squatting under a bridge near Loveland. They were described as having wrinkles instead of hair on their heads, lopsided chests, and wide mouths without lips, like frogs. One of them is said to have held up a bar device that shed sparks. A strong odor of alfalfa and almonds was reportedly left behind."In May 1955, a man reported an unbelievably strange sight while driving home at 3:30 a.m. in Loveland, Ohio, northeast of Cincinnati. He claimed to have spotted three bipedal reptilian creatures standing by the side of the road, and pulled over to watch them from his car for about three minutes. One of the froglike beings carried some type of bar or wand above its head, and sparks were shooting out of the device. The driver notified Loveland police of what he had seen, although no evidence of the creatures was later found.

For approximately twenty years, there were no further reported sightings of the Loveland Frog. On 3 March 1972, an anonymous police officer was driving on Riverside Road at around 1 AM, when he saw what looked like a dog on the icy road. He pulled over, and shone his headlights on it. It suddenly stood up, jumped over the guardrail, and went down the embankment into the Miami River. The officer's description allegedly was as follows:

The creature was three to four feet tall, 50 to 75 pounds, leathery skin, possibly wet - matted hair on its body that made it look textured, possible tail, a head and face like a frog or lizard, and could leap over the roads' guard rail.

He called the dispatcher and returned to the station. He and another officer returned to the scene later that night, where they saw scrape marks on the hill going into the river. No official report was filed.

The second sighting occurred two weeks later. Another police officer was driving into Loveland, when he saw an animal in the road. Thinking that it was an animal hit by a car, he stopped to move it. It suddenly stood up, but in a crouched position; then hobbled over to the side of the road, stepped over the guardrail, while keeping his eyes on the officer. The officer then shot at it but missed. His description matched that of the first officer, only he may have seen a tail.

Neither of the officers filed an official report of the creature, but word of their sightings leaked to the media. A farmer in Loveland also claimed to see a froglike creature in March 1972. Investigators began to speculate on a connection with the 1955 sighting of reptilian creatures, and the possibility of a secret race of lizard men inhabiting Ohio's rivers. Some have suggested that the officers may have actually seen a Nile monitor lizard or a large iguana, which can be over six feet in length.

Security personnel in a motel in the Dominican Republic are said to have seen a similar creature in September 1998. They said it was about five feet long and three feet wide.

Stories

There is an old Shawnee Indian tail about the Shawnahooc or “River Demon” from the little Miami River area. The story is about a hunting party that spots a large lizard-like creature on a river bank. The sight of such a creature intrigued the Indians so they tried to shoot it with an arrow, but when they approached the creature it stood upright, like a man, looked at them, then dove into the river. When the hunting party returned to the village and told there story the villagers became frightened and didn't travel to the river alone. The village sent there strongest braves to kill the creature, but it was never seen again. Some say it was a demon and vanished at the sight of the Indian warriors who came to destroy it, and some say it was a guardian spirit who protected the Indian valley. Are the resent stories of a giant frog-like creature in Loveland Ohio the same creature, is it demon or protector or just a figment of imagination. The truth may never be known.

Theories about origin and existence

Abnormally large reptiles and reptile men have also been reported in other parts of the country, including the Lizardman of Wayne, New Jersey, and the Giant Lizard of Milton, Kentucky. The most celebrated successor to the Loveland Frog in recent years was the Lizard Man craze that swept Bishopville, South Carolina, in 1988. A man reported that a 7-foot reptilian beast with red eyes and three-fingered appendages chased his car along a country road at over 40 miles per hour. A large number of other sightings followed, and police officers discovered three-toed tracks.
