Magick in the most general tense is an act designed to intentionally make things change. The particular spelling with a “k” was made popular early in the twentieth century by Aleister Crowley. He made it a core tenet for his method of practicingThelema. Crowley chose the different spelling of the word to be able to distinguish it from illusionary or stage magic. Magick does not make miracles, it will not violate the physical laws of nature. Aleister Crowley viewed magick as a necessary path for a person to understand their true self, a person’s destiny or will, sort of using freewill to influence that destiny.

Influences

Since Crowley first began to write about magick, a myriad of arcane and spiritual based practices have used the alternate spelling. Redifining it’s meaning, giving it influence over physical events using supernatural or mystical sources, for a great variety of magickal practics Other general definitions, attributed to Aleister Crowley are; “The science and art of causing change to occur in conformity of will.” “Every intentional(willed) act is a magickal act.” “Magick is the science of understanding oneself and one’s conditions. It is the art of applying that understanding in action.” High or Low Magick Aleister Crowley may have prefered magic as a high art, he would often use the term, low magick. High magick was necessary for attaining enlightenment, finding one’s true will. Low magick he said were those like; witchcraft or sorcery. The difference depending on the intent, if it was intended for true will or individual ego.

Techniques

There are many ways magick is used and viewed as. In it’s most general definitions is is any action enacted by the will, intent on changing some aspect of destiny. Most often evolving with other forms of ritual, like; banishing, summoning, channeling, divination, astral travel, and many other forms of witchcraft.
