In Philippine mythology, the multo is the soul of a dead person that has returned to the mortal world.


Etymology

Multo, the Tagalog word for ghost, comes from the Spanish word muerto, which means death. The Tagalog word for being visited by a multo is minumulto, or dinadalaw


Beliefs

Filipinos believe that some kind of multo, often a spirit of their former kin regularly visits them. Born Again Christian Filipinos regard the multo as evil spirits, while the Catholic Filipinos do regard them as true.


Behavior

Multo may want to finish an incomplete task or promise, or take revenge, it may return because of in improper burial or an unusually violent death or suicide. The ghost may be seeking a replacement so that it can live again.
