The Yara-ma-yha-who is a little vampiric furry creature from the Australian Aboriginal folklore.

Description

The Yara-ma-yha-who looks like a little red man, approximately four feet tall, with a very big head and a large mouth without teeth. It tips of the fingers and toes are shaped like the suckers of an octopus. It lives in fig trees and does not hunt for food, but waits until an unsuspecting traveller rests under the tree, then catches the victim and drains their blood using the suckers, making them weak.

Behavior

The yara-ma-yha-who lived in the tops of fig trees and did not hunt for food, but waited until unsuspecting victims sought shelter under the tree. It then jumped down and placed its hands and feet on the body. It would drain the blood from the victim to the point the person was left weak and helpless, but rarely, to cause the victim to die. The creature would later return and consume its meal. It then drank water and took a nap. According to the story, the victim is then regurgitated, still alive, but "shorter" than before. When people are captured on several occasions, they would grow a little shorter each time until they reach the same size as the yara-ma-yha-who. Additionally, their skin would first become smooth and red-coloured and then they would begin to grow hair all of their body smaller, eventually becoming a yara-ma-yha-who themselves.
