Aberewa is the name given to the first woman as well as a powerful earth goddess named Asaase Yaa. Her role explains the creation of the sky god in two very similar myths.

In one account while Aberewa prepared food for her children she pounded palm nuts in a mortar with her pestle. However, every time she pounded the pestle she would bump Nyame, who would be the god of the sky. Annoyed by the bumping, Nyame left the earth for the sky and decided to stay there.

In the other story, Nyame is bumped into the sky by the pestle as opposed to leaving for it on his own will.
