The akashita as imagined by Toriyama Sekien.

An Akashita (赤舌, lit. "red tongue") is a yokai in Japanese foklore.

Origin

The Akashita appeared in Toriyama Sekien's Gazu Hyakki Yako and may be related to the shakuzetsujin of Onmyod ( lit. "red-tongued god") which guards the western gate of Jupiter or the akakuchi, a monster from a Kano school picture scroll.

Appearance

The Akashita is a creature with clawed hands, a hairy face and a huge lolling tongue, with most of its body hidden in a black cloud over a floodgate.
