Sogen was the name of a monk who lived at Mibudera, a temple in Kyoto. Because Sogen stole money and lamp oil intended as offerings, he was sent to Hell after his death, and his body was burned away.
His agonized face is said to still linger in the midst of a ghostly fireball, haunting the outskirts of Mibudera.
